Reading

Curriculum Leaders: Mrs Collingwood and Mrs Kirk

At Kidgate Academy, we understand that reading is the gateway to learning. Reading is a life skill that every child should have the opportunity to develop. We believe that reading purposefully, frequently and for pleasure is crucial in supporting well-being, curiosity and academic success. By the time children leave Kidgate, we aim for them to be confident, fluent readers who are able to access purposeful texts which explore the diversity and richness of the world around them.

We believe that reading is the key to unlocking learning and is one of the most important skills a child will develop. From the moment children join us, we provide a rich reading curriculum that develops phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills through high-quality teaching and a wide range of engaging texts.

We foster a love of reading by sharing stories daily, providing access to high-quality books and encouraging children to explore a variety of authors, genres and styles. Reading is celebrated throughout the school and is woven into all areas of the curriculum. We work closely with families to support reading at home and believe that a strong partnership between school and parents helps children develop into enthusiastic, lifelong readers. Through our reading provision, we aim to nurture curious minds, broaden horizons and ensure that every child leaves Kidgate with the skills and confidence to succeed in the next stage of their education and beyond.
