Phonics

Curriculum Leader: Miss Skipworth

At Kidgate Academy, we use the Read, Write, Inc. phonics programme to help children learn to read and write. Phonics is all about learning the sounds that letters make and how we can put those sounds together to read words or write them down.

We start teaching phonics in Reception, as soon as children are settled into school. Children take part in fun, interactive lessons where they explore sounds, letters, and words. These lessons help children gain the confidence they need to read stories, write sentences, and spell words correctly.

Children are placed into small groups according to their current phonics level. These groups are flexible and change every half term based on each child’s progress, so everyone gets the right support for their individual learning journey.

Through Read, Write, Inc., children not only learn to read and write, but also develop a love of stories, words, and language. They enjoy exciting activities, games, and practice sessions that make learning phonics fun, engaging, and rewarding.

By the time children move through the school, they have strong reading and writing skills that give them a fantastic foundation for all areas of learning.
