Curriculum Leader: Mrs Coppin

At Kidgate Academy, the language curriculum is designed to teach and expose pupils to different languages and cultures, helping them to develop a natural respect for diversity and an appreciation of people’s differences. Pupils are provided with the opportunity to build a genuine interest in and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding. By learning a second language, pupils are able to explore the relationship between language and identity, while gaining a deeper understanding of other cultures and the wider world. This learning also helps them to develop greater awareness of themselves, of others, and of cultural differences, supporting them in becoming open-minded and respectful global citizens.

The intention is that pupils at Kidgate Academy will be inspired to become life-long language learners, using their skills beyond the classroom and throughout their lives.

Our curriculum is enriched through the use of Language Angels, a programme which enables pupils to learn grammar, translations and the differences in pronunciation between English and French in an engaging and accessible way. Lessons are brought to life through songs, games and interactive resources, helping pupils to experience language learning as fun, creative and memorable. Through this approach, pupils are not only supported to achieve success in French, but also equipped with transferable language-learning skills that can be applied to the study of other languages in the future.
