Art

Curriculum Leaders: Miss Deakins and Mrs Ryan

At Kidgate Academy, we believe that Art and Design is the spark for creativity and imagination, allowing our pupils to express themselves, develop their unique artistic style, and explore the world of art in a constantly changing environment. Our high-quality program, designed to inspire, challenge, and enthuse every child, empowers them to think and create through drawing, painting, and sculpting with a diverse range of materials. From the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children embark on an open-ended creative journey where the process is just as important as the final product. They explore, experiment, and develop a deep understanding of colour, design, texture, form, and function, learning a rich array of techniques inspired by the works of unique and inspiring artists.

Throughout their time at Kidgate Academy, pupils have ample opportunities to explore, experiment, and invent, promoting a passion and enjoyment for the subject across the school. Art and Design encourages critical and analytical thinking, as pupils take inspiration from a range of artists, designers, and craft makers from different times and cultures. We believe Art and Design fosters a sense of connection, belonging, and identity, encouraging pupils to voice their opinions about their own and others’ art. The formal art elements of line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, and 3D form underpin the teaching of Art and Design, helping pupils become proficient in the skills they are taught while continuously appreciating the art around them.
